From a dog-friendly park and yellow sand beach to spectacular red stone cliffs, this walk truly is a delight! You will be guaranteed some great views on the most westerly point of the Jurassic Coast, a World Heritage Site stretching from Exmouth to near Swanage, Dorset.
Bird watching is a great activity on Orcombe point - likely sights are Gannet, Sandwich Terns, Manx Shearwaters and various gulls.
In the summer, the wildflower meadows on the headland are abundant with Bird’s-foot Trefoil, Creeping Buttercup, Cut-leaved Crane’s Bill and White Clover. The diversity of flowers and grasses here attract the attention of butterflies like Meadow Brown, Gatekeeper, Small Tortoiseshell, Peacock and Marbled White.
Directions
Park in Exmouth at the Maer Road Car Park and cross the road into the The Maer Nature Reserve, head towards Sideshore/Edge Watersports and cross the road to the beach.
Head east along Exmouth Beach towards Orcombe point walking either on the path or on the sand (the best option for low tide*) until you reach the slipway at the far end.
Head up the coast path around Orcombe point, past the Geoneedle towards Sandy Bay and make a loop back around on the footpath through the fields.
On the way back, take the footpath above the beach arriving onto Foxholes Hill rd. Follow this road back to the car park.
*At low tide, you may be able to use the steps further along Exmouth Beach which head directly up to Orcombe Point, although proceed with caution and research tide times before you set off as this access point is tidal.
